What ACH measures

ACH stands for air changes per hour: how many times a room's entire volume of air gets replaced with fresh air in sixty minutes. A closet that barely moves air might sit at 3 ACH. A commercial kitchen hood can push past 15. The number is a direct read on whether a fan or duct run is doing real ventilation work.

Low ACH lets moisture, cooking grease, dust, and airborne contaminants build up. How the formula works

ACH and CFM describe the same airflow from two directions. Given a known airflow, this calculator solves ACH = CFM x 60 / room volume. Given a target ACH instead, the HVAC CFM calculator solves the inverse: CFM = room volume x target ACH / 60. Both come from the same relationship, just solved for a different unknown.

Getting from a blank room to an ACH number takes four steps:

  1. 1. Measure the room. Length, width, and ceiling height, in feet.
  2. 2. Find the volume. Length x width x height gives cubic feet.
  3. 3. Read the airflow. The CFM rating is usually stamped on the fan, blower, or duct register.
  4. 4. Apply the formula. Airflow x 60, divided by room volume, gives ACH.

Worked example: sizing a bathroom exhaust fan

Take a bathroom that measures 8 ft by 6 ft, with an 8 ft ceiling. Bathrooms fall in the 7 to 8 ACH range, and the fan already installed is rated at 50 CFM.

  1. Floor area: 8 x 6 = 48 sq ft.
  2. Room volume: 48 x 8 = 384 cubic feet.
  3. Airflow x 60: 50 x 60 = 3,000.
  4. Divide by room volume: 3,000 / 384 = 7.8 ACH.

That 7.8 ACH lands inside the 7 to 8 range a bathroom needs, so the fan is sized correctly. Put the same 50 CFM fan in a larger bathroom, 12 ft by 10 ft with an 8 ft ceiling (960 cubic feet), and it only reaches 3.1 ACH, well under target. That room needs a fan closer to 112 CFM to clear 7 ACH. Room volume, not the fan rating alone, decides whether the airflow is enough.

Why hitting the target ACH matters

A room short on airflow holds onto whatever it produces. A bedroom that runs low mostly just feels stuffy.
