Locals call it Smallbany, and there is a real reason the nickname stuck: this is a city where the state government is the economy, and the Empire State Plaza sits in the middle of it like a second downtown. The South End got its own piece of infrastructure news in August 2024, when the city cut the ribbon on the Beaver Creek Clean River Project, a fifty-five million dollar underground treatment facility built beneath Lincoln Park to screen and disinfect up to 300 million gallons a year of sewage overflow before it reaches the Hudson. Mayor Kathy Sheehan called the South End a neighborhood torn apart when the Empire State Plaza displaced residents decades earlier, and framed the project as a deliberate reinvestment. It is part of the wider Albany Pool consent order the city is working under with the state, and it means wet-weather sewer construction has been visibly in the news here for years.
